An Italian turtel and root wood musical box

Rome, 19th century
On the centre the doves of Pliny framed by a gilt silver decoration. The mosaic of Pliny was discovered 1737 at the Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli by Cardinal Giuseppe Alessandro Furietti (1684-1764). In one of his treaties, published 1752, he describes the fineness of the mosaic and adds that in this rectangular ounce can be counted up to 160 tesserae. This is one of the most copied and reproduced mosaics of the great Roman artist of mosaics, it is now located in the Capitoline Museums of Rome., 3x8,5x6 cm.
